Colombia Andres Cardozo

Cost per 250mL serving - $ 2.81

This lot from the young and talented Andres Cardozo of Finca Buenavista (located at 1.800 masl) in Huila is our very first release featuring a rather uncommon variety, ombligon, and we are certainly excited to share it with our fans and followers. What hit us first, and most notably when first sampling this coffee was the clear and definite stewed blueberry note, a note which is certainly uncommon in washed Colombian coffees, and which reminds us of a stack of steaming blueberry pancakes, straight off of the griddle. We also pick up the flavors of deep, red, floral hibiscus and dark, robust, and tannic Darjeeling tea—a truly layered, unique, and beautiful cup.

Ombligon is a relatively rare and newly-discovered variety, currently grown solely in Huila, Colombia. Definitive genetic research has yet to be performed on ombligon to reveal its genetic composition and heritage, but there are a few theories regarding its origins. One theory is that it is yet another example of an Ethiopian landrace variety that made its way to Colombia, just like pink bourbon, chiroso, geisha, mejorada, papayo, sidra, aji and wush wush. This would make sense, at least in terms of the similarities between the typical flavor profile of ombligon and that of Ethiopian landraces. Due, however, to its hardiness and adaptation to Colombian growing conditions, as well as similarity in morphology, others theorize that it is a mutation of more traditional varieties like caturra, bourbon, castillo, or even pacamara. Ombligon has been found to grow best between 1.600 and 1.800 masl.

All coffee is sold whole-bean to reduce oxidation, and increase the longevity of volatile organic compounds.
