We are beyond excited to share Jose and Roger Urena’s stunning washed geisha from Finca Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, with followers of Mirra! Roger has been high up on our list of producers that we have wanted to work with, so we are so pleased to be able to begin this relationship by releasing such a strong offering from him. We would say that this coffee comes as close to a perfect score as possible in terms of how both variety and terroir are represented in the final cup; it’s quite simply an unparalleled harmony of flavors. When enjoying this one, we get, first and foremost, a substantial layer of delicate purple, lilac florals—as any amazing geisha should have in our opinion. This is followed by subtle notes of clear, white peach, and—a rather unique note for a washed geisha—a slice of fresh, tropical guava in the cup.

Roger Urena began working in coffee farming when he was only a boy, helping out his parents and grandparents on their farms. In 2015, Roger came to the realization that it would be more efficient, economical, and sustainable to cease sending his coffee to local cooperatives for processing, and instead to purchase Finca Santa Teresa so that he might begin processing and milling his coffee himself. Santa Teresa is located at 2050masl, and is surrounded on all sides by state-protected forest, guaranteeing the ecological longevity and protection of the farm’s environment. Besides geisha, Mr. Urena grows sudan rume, SL28, Ethiopian landrace, pacamara, villalobos, bourbon, mejorada, and catuai—a true coffee variety garden. Finca Santa Teresa also won first place in the Costa Rican COE this year with another washed geisha lot, very similar to this one. Now, Roger operates the farm in partnership with his son, Jose Urena, who share the desire for Finca Santa Teresa to remain one of the very best farms in all of Costa Rica.

Geisha is one of the most prized varieties of coffee due to its absolutely exceptional potential for quality, and particularly intense, even perfumed florality, sweetness, and clarity of flavor. Geisha is an Ethiopian heirloom variety, having been first identified in the 1930s in the forests of Gori Gesha. The variety first attracted global attention in 2005, when the Peterson family of Hacienda La Esmeralda in Boquete, Panama entered a lot of geisha grown on their estate into the Best of Panama competition, and won. Ever since, geisha has come to enjoy the status of the most lauded variety of coffee in commercial cultivation, and is heavily represented among winning lots in Cup of Excellence competitions annually.

All coffee is sold whole-bean to reduce oxidization, and increase the longevity of volatile organic compounds.
