Panama Yenitzin de Aguilar
This washed SL28 from Yenitzin de Aguilar of Finca Feryen is wild. If we were pressed to pick just one, this is likely the offering that we have been most stoked about sharing with the public, due both to the crazy quality it presents as well as its uniqueness; a washed SL28 from Panama—crazy! We can say without a doubt that we’ve never experienced a coffee that tastes more Kenyan than this one, while not being Kenyan at all; it presents an extremely transparent representation of the very best characteristics of an SL28, while also yielding a bit of that unparalleled terroir Panama is known for in the brewed cup as well. This offering gives us that classic Kenyan bold body and dark fruitiness of elderberry as well as the mellow florality of elderflower. This being an SL28, you can also of course expect some super lively acidity as well, we experience lime zest on the palette for this one.
Finca Feryen, located in the Boquete region of Panama, is an award winning farm owned and operated by Yenitzin de Aguilar. Although their focus, like most Panamanian estates, is their geisha crop, they certainly have dedicated equal care to the cultivation of this SL28 lot. In addition to growing geisha and SL28, they also grow a bit of pacamara on the farm. This is the first time this lot has been imported to the US, and we couldn’t be more enthused to represent his hard work in this way, and to begin our collaboration with Yenitzin on such a high note, with a coffee as outstanding and unique as this.
SL28 is perhaps the most lauded common African cultivar for its quality and strong drought resistance. It is a cultivar of the bourbon genetic group which was first released by Scott Agricultural Laboratories in 1935 in Kabete, Kenya. It quickly became dominant throughout Kenya and has now spread beyond East Africa to Central and South America, due to its high potential for quality.
All coffee is sold whole-bean to reduce oxidization, and increase the longevity of volatile aromatic compounds.
